New to cricket? You don’t need a club bag full of gear to start. Here’s how Bolt Cricket recommends building a first kit, depending on the format you want to play.

1. The All-in-One Starter — FiberX Carbon Fiber Starter Kit

If you want a single purchase that gets you on the field, the FiberX Carbon Fiber Starter Kit is the easiest choice. It includes a Short Handle FiberX composite bat, a Bolt Strike Stumps set, two bails, three Adult Bolt Wind Balls and one carry bag. The bat supports wind-, tennis- and tape-ball play; tennis and tape balls are not included. Bolt kits are fixed and prepacked; components are not selected, swapped or mixed at checkout. 2. The Tape-Ball Starter

Tape-ball is the format most North American cricket players grow up on — a tennis ball wrapped in electrical tape, played on cement or turf with a lighter bat.

When you’re ready for hardball cricket — leagues, clubs, school cricket — graduate to an English Willow or Kashmir Willow bat. Don’t forget pads, gloves, and a helmet for hardball.

FAQs

What’s a good first bat size for a child?

Use player height as a starting reference, then confirm the selected bat’s size, pickup and control. Age alone does not establish fit. See our full Size Guide; do not automatically choose a larger size.

Do I need to knock in my bat?

English willow bats require knocking in before first use. Kashmir willow may be used sooner but benefits from light knocking in. Tape-ball, tennis-ball, and plastic bats do not require knocking in.

How do I choose between formats?

If you’ve never played, start with tape-ball or tennis-ball. They’re forgiving, fun, and cheap to start. Move to hardball as your technique develops.
